Extension of the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics

The expansion of the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics will comprise two new buildings and be divided into several construction phases. Construction of an additional institute building and a high-hygiene laboratory is scheduled to begin in October 2025, with completion planned for the end of 2029.

Advances in neuroscience are now enabling us to gain an ever better understanding of how information is processed in the brain. This benefits not only medicine, but also many other fields of research that deal with the interaction between humans and their environment.

The extension buildings will create the conditions necessary to remain not only competitive but also at the forefront of international basic research.

The institute expansion fits into the concept of surrounding buildings with research institutes and start-up companies, thus connecting the Max Planck Institute campus with the “Obere Viehweide” technology park.

Visual references to the Swabian Alb are also to be created. The rectangular structure of the high-hygiene laboratory will adjoin it and form a connecting structure between the new institute building and the Magnetic Resonance Center of the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics.

Between and around the buildings, new connecting paths, green spaces, and retreat areas will be created, which, in conjunction with the façade design, will blend into the landscape of the Max Planck Campus, the technology park, and the nearby recreational and relaxation areas in the countryside.
